Six Book Challenge

April Cursons, a fellow colleague and book club member has been given the fantastic opportunity to promote and manage the 'Six Book Challenge'. The Reading Agency’s Six Book Challenge encourages adults and young people to enjoy and expand their reading. Over 40,000 people take part each year through libraries, colleges, adult education and prisons. The aim of the game is to grab yourself a reading diary, read 6 things throughout the year- whether it be a book, journal or online article (it really is up to you), fill out your diary (a short review and mark out of 5) submit it to the College Learning Resource Centre and voila! You have completed the challenge! For Yeovil College Students-encourage your class to sign up to take the challenge and you’ll be entered into the special prize draw! If everyone in your tutor group completes the challenge, you could win a retro sweets hamper to share! “ For more information contact April at learningcentre@yeovil.ac.uk ....

Yeovil College Fresher's Fayre..Split of the club- A or B?

Thank you to all students that showed an interest and signed up for the Book Club- we had over 30 people join! With such a high demand, the logical thing to do with the club now is to split it into two groups- the 1st group (Book Club A) will contain the original book club members and any new members of STAFF and MEMBERS OF PUBLIC. Book Club B will contain all new STUDENTS (and any of their friends if interested). The club will now have 2 meetings every term, Book Club A will remain at 4pm, and Book Club B will be at lunch time on the same day (the meetings will remain on the dates originally stated and published). Book Club A will start off with 'The Goldfinch' by Donna Tartt and Book Club B will start off with 'The Cuckoo's Calling'  by Robert Galbraith. Again- thank you so much for all of you're interest in the club- i am looking forward to getting started and getting to know you all! Check out some pics taken from the day below... ...

Summer Blues..

With the summer drawing to a close, and the last "official" book club of the academic year over and done with, it is time for our members to take a little breather from the club. We currently do not have a book that we are reading, however members (old and new) are more than welcome to read any of the books we have already read throughout the year.   I am busily promoting the club to new students and potential members, where we will meet next on Tuesday 30th September (time and location TBC).   Without further ado, to kick off the new academic year and the 2nd year of book club, we will be reading 'The Goldfinch' by Donna Tartt.       'The Goldfinch' is a story of 13 year old Theo, the survivor of a bomb attack that kills his mother. He finds himself wondering into a museum to take shelter and there he delves into mysterious wonder when he meets an elderly man and a feisty red haired girl, who tell him to take an antique ring to a ...

'The Silkworm' Book Club Review...

Sam: Having read 'The Cuckoos Calling' earlier in the year, I was eagerly anticipating the release of Silkworm and it did not disappoint. At the end, I just could not believe that I had not worked out the culprit earlier. All the clues are there in the book, Rowling has tied everything up yet I think, like many I hope, I just made one presumption at the beginning of the book about events which distracted me from the culprit and their motives. I did not have a clue until that final showdown who had done it or why. I found the motive and the characters very believable. Occasionally I did get confused between the characters as there were so many which probably reflects the busy world of publishing and all the 'big' personalities, Rowling has encountered in her own experiences. The development of Robin and Strike's relationship and the revelations about their other relationships seemed to ring true and add dimension to the character. I found myself intrigued...

'City of Bones' Book Club members reviews...

Margaret I was so sceptical when I found out that this book was a teen fantasy. I really didn't think that I was going to enjoy it yet before I'd even completed City of Bones, I'd purchased the follow up which I look forward to reading this summer. I didn't realise there could be so many twists and turns in a plot and I found it useful that this novel was split in to chapters. It made it easy to read a bit each day and I found myself looking forward to my next reading session as there seemed to be a point to each chapter and each one seemed to leave you with questions and a longing to read the next chapter for the answers. I enjoyed meeting all of the different characters and found their portrayal just made the plot more convincing. Though I have to say, I was very disappointed when Hodge's true colours showed through. For some reason, the demon motorbikes really caught my imagination and seemed to add some lightness to the scenes without ridiculing th...
