The Sherborne Literary Festival Writing Competition..


The Sherborne Literary Festival is holding its annual Writing Competitions later this year. There are four categories onto which you can enter:


Open Short Story:

Entry is open to any writer, of any age. There is not theme and entrants many write on any subject. Stories must be the original, unpublished work of that writer and must not exceed 1,500 words. Entries must be typed, double-spaced and one side of A4 paper, with all pages showing the title of the story and the entrant’s name. There is no limit to the number of entries each writer can submit, but a £10 fee must accompany each entry.

First Prize £200

Children’s/Young People’s Short Story:

Entry is open to all children and young people, divided into three age groups: 16-18. 11-15 and 10 and under. There is no theme in any of the age categories and entrants may write about any subject. Stories should be the original, unpublished work of that writer and must not exceed 1,000 words. Entries must be typed, double-spaced, on one side of A4 paper, with all pages showing the title of the story and the entrant’s name. There is no limit on the number of the entries each writer can submit, but a £2 fee must accompany each entry.

16-18 age group:
First Prize: £50
Second Prize: £30
Third Prize: £20
11-15 age group:
First Prize: £30
Second Prize: £20
Third Prize: £15
10 and under group:
First Prize: £25 Book Token
Second Prize: £20 Book Token
Third Prize: £10 Book Token

Open Poetry Competition

Entry is open to any poet, of any age. There is no theme and entrants may write on any subject. Poems should be the original, unpublished work of that poet. They must not exceed 40 lines in length. There is no limit on the number of entries each poet can submit, but a £5 entry fee must accompany each one.

First Prize: £100
Second Prize: £50
Third Prize: £25
 

Children’s/Young People’s Poetry Competition

Entry is open to all children and young people, divided into three age groups: 16-18. 11-15 and 10 and under. There is no theme in any of the age categories and entrants may write about any subject. Stories should be the original, unpublished work of that writer and must not exceed 40 lines in length. There is no limit on the number of entries each poet can submit, but a £2 entry fee must accompany each entry.

16-18 age group:
First Prize: £30
Second Prize: £20
Third Prize: £15
11-15 age group:
First Prize: £25
Second Prize: £20
Third Prize: £10
10 and under group:
First Prize: £20 Book Token
Second Prize: £15 Book Token
Third Prize: £10 Book Token
 

Competition Details:

The closing date for entries in the open competitions is

31st August 2014

The closing date for the entries in the Children’s/Young People’s competitions is

30th June 2014

Entries may be posted, or delivered by hand, to Sherborne Tourist Information Centre. They should be clearly marked “Sherborne Literary Festival Competitions” and should be accompanied by the appropriate fee and an entry form.

The names of the judges for each competition will be confirmed in the coming weeks, and will be published on the website, as will the date of each prize-giving ceremony (www.sherborneliterarysociety.com). All prizes will be awarded during this year’s festival, which runs 15th-19th October 2014.

National Libraries Day - Quick Reads = Quite Remarkable
