Hello and welcome to the Yeovil College Book Club!
I would like to start off with a small introduction from myself, Carey Simpson. I have been appointed by Yeovil College to facilitate, support and manage monthly meetings for students and members of the public who wish to share their love of reading with others.
In collaboration with SWRLS organisation and Yeovil Public Library, myself and Yeovil College would like to invite you to join an interactive social media driven book club which will run from September 2013 until July 2014.
As previously stated, there will be monthly meetings held, which are initially agreed to be the last Tuesday of every month at 4pm. The meetings will alternate between Yeovil College, Mudford Road, University Centre, Preston Road and the Yeovil Public Library, King George Street. Please note, these details may be subject to change dependant on member availability.
The book's discussed will mainly concentrate on recent novels from popular modern authours. The material will be provided byYeovil College via paperback and/or e-readers (in a limited capacity).
Without further ado, to get us going, our 1st book will be 'And the mountains echoed' by the author Khaled Hosseini. Hosseini is most popular for the novel 'The Kite Runner' which spent an outstanding 101 weeks in the best sellers list in 2003, so he is the perfect author to get us off to a good start with. If members have already read the book, i encourage them to re-read (or lightly skim) and make some discussion points they wish to raise at the meeting.
I hope to see many new and old faces at our 1st meeting in September, the books, starter packs and more formal introductions will be made then. The 1st meeting will be held at:
Yeovil College Academy Resource Centre, Tuesday 24th September, 4pm (estimated at one hour)
Existing college students are welcome to meet me there, but any members of the public (Yeovil Public Library) please can you sign in at reception and ask for either myself or my project manager Chris Canning.
Do not worry about purchasing or reading the book until the first meeting is held, Yeovil College will provide anything you require.
I look forward to seeing everybody on the 24th, in the meantime please feel free to visit Chris Canning at the Yeovil College FE Freshers' Fayre between 10.45am and 12.15pm on Friday 6th September and do not hesitate to comment and ask anything on Blogger, i will be maintaining it regularly.
And remember.. "Bookworms will rule the world, as soon as we finish one more chapter!"
Carey
